Your body has information.
My work is to listen.
I believe good medicine begins with curiosity about the whole person in front of me.
Get to know my approach
You may come in because you're exhausted even though you're sleeping.
Because your digestion has changed, your hormones feel different, you're feeling more anxious or low, or the tension in your neck keeps coming back.
Maybe your laboratory results were called “normal,” but you still don't feel like yourself.
Or maybe you know exactly what you want help with. You simply want someone who will look deeper and consider the whole picture.
That's how I approach care.
I want to understand what your body is communicating, what may be contributing to how you feel, and which way of supporting your body makes sense for you.
Sometimes we work from the inside out. Sometimes from the outside in. Often, we work from both directions.
From the inside out + the outside in
I don't see the body as a collection of separate parts.
Your hormones don't exist separately from your stress, sleep, nutrition and metabolism. Your digestion can affect how you feel far beyond your digestive tract. Your nervous system responds to what is happening inside your body and what is happening in your life.
And the things we see, feel and experience through the physical body give us information too.
The tension you carry. The way your body moves. The places that feel restricted. Changes in your skin or hair. The way your breathing changes when you're stressed. The way your body responds when it finally has an opportunity to settle.
This is why I work from the inside out and the outside in.
These are different ways of listening to and working with the same person.
From the inside out
Inside-out care asks us to understand what may be happening physiologically and what may be influencing it.
Depending on what you're experiencing, we may look at nutrition, digestion, hormones, thyroid function, nutrient status, metabolic health, sleep, inflammation, stress physiology, nervous system patterns, lifestyle and laboratory findings.
I don't look at a laboratory result in isolation. I want to know how it fits with your symptoms, your history, the other patterns we're seeing and how you actually feel.
And sometimes the conversation takes us somewhere you weren't expecting.
You may come in because your hormones feel completely different and realize you've spent years taking care of everyone else and can barely remember what taking care of yourself looks like.
You may come in wanting help with your digestion and a question I ask gets you talking about the stressful job you no longer enjoy, and how often your stomach seems to respond when the stress ramps up.
You may tell me you can't settle your mind at night and begin recognizing how long you've been functioning in a state of constant doing.
Those things matter too.
Whole-person care means being willing to look at what may be affecting your health, even when it doesn't fit neatly into a laboratory report.

There are also ways we can work directly with the physical body.
Through Craniosacral Intuitive Bodywork, I use touch and hands-on techniques to work with tension, restriction, movement, body awareness and nervous system patterns.
Breath, grounding, movement and somatic practices can give the nervous system different input and offer another way of supporting what is happening internally.
Regenerative medicine allows us to work directly with joints, tissues, the scalp and other areas we want to support.
And Natural Aesthetics allows us to address visible changes in skin, collagen, pigmentation, hair and aging.
There is plenty of overlap between the two directions. The body doesn't divide itself into neat categories, and neither does my approach.
Sometimes working directly with the body gives us another way in.
Explore Craniosacral Intuitive BodyworkWe look better when we feel better. And sometimes we feel better when we like what we see.
I believe both matter.
When you're feeling healthier, rested and more like yourself, you often see that reflected in your appearance.
And sometimes looking in the mirror and liking what you see a little more helps you feel more confident and more like yourself too.
Maybe changes in your skin make you feel older than you feel inside. Maybe pigmentation bothers you every time you look in the mirror. Maybe you look more tired than you actually feel. Or maybe you simply want to support your skin as you age.
Wanting to address those things can be part of caring for yourself.
I approach aesthetics the same way I approach the rest of my work. We start with you.
What are you seeing? What bothers you? What do you want to preserve? How do you want to look and feel when we're finished?
Then we decide whether there is a treatment that makes sense.
The goal is to help you look refreshed, healthy, and more like yourself.

The foundations matter because everything else has to live on top of them.
This approach is personal for me
My passion for medicine began early. My mom says I wanted to be a doctor when I was three years old, although I remember wanting to be a ballerina.
I didn't know about naturopathic medicine until I was faced with my own health issues and had a severe reaction to what I had been told was the best available medication for my thyroid condition.
That experience led me to a naturopathic doctor.
Within two weeks of working together, I was already feeling relieved and so much better.
My ND worked with me to remove food sensitivities, reduce and manage my stress, improve my nutritional status, and make changes to my diet and lifestyle. We also used supplements and herbs to support my body.
It was amazing to me how much of a difference dietary and lifestyle changes could make in how I felt.
Within about two months, my thyroid hormone levels were back within the laboratory reference range without the medication I had reacted to.
My endocrinologist couldn't believe it.
And my levels remained in range afterward.
That was my experience, and it changed the direction of my life.
It made me curious about what else we might learn when we look beyond the immediate symptom and ask what may be contributing, what the body needs, and what could help it function better.
It also taught me something I still believe deeply today:
The foundations matter because everything else has to live on top of them.
That experience eventually led me to become a naturopathic doctor.
And my understanding of health has continued to deepen ever since.
My work has taught me to listen in different ways
Medicine gave me one way of listening.
Laboratory testing gave me another.
Craniosacral and visceral work taught me to listen with my hands.
Working with the nervous system taught me to notice what happens when the body is overwhelmed, guarded, settled or feels safe enough to let go.
Regenerative medicine gave me additional ways to support healing and repair.
Aesthetic medicine showed me how closely the way we feel and the way we see ourselves can be connected.
And intuition has taught me to pay attention when something deserves another question.
There are things we can measure. And there are patterns we notice by listening carefully.
I don't use intuition in place of medical evaluation or clinical reasoning.
Intuition helps me notice where I may need to listen more closely.
It may influence the question I ask next, the connection I notice, or an area that deserves further exploration.
Underneath all of this is deeper work
Most people don't walk into my office saying they want greater self-awareness.
They want to feel better.
They want their digestion to settle. They want more energy. They want to understand what is happening with their hormones. They want their mind to feel clearer. They want less pain, less anxiety, better sleep, or a body that doesn't feel like it's fighting them all day.
That's where we begin.
But as we pay closer attention to the body, you may begin noticing more.
You notice what happens in your body when you're overwhelmed.
You recognize when you've been pushing for too long.
You notice the difference between what supports you and what drains you.
You realize you've spent years taking care of everyone else and have forgotten how to take care of yourself.
You recognize that the job, relationship, habit or pace of life you've learned to tolerate may no longer be serving you.
You start noticing when you're holding your breath, when your shoulders creep toward your ears, when your stomach tightens during a conversation, or when you're exhausted and continue pushing anyway.
That awareness is information too.
To me, true health includes understanding your body, becoming more aware of yourself, and recognizing what you need to live and feel well.
Sometimes the work begins with a physical symptom and leads to a deeper understanding of yourself.
And sometimes, as you learn to listen to your body, you begin hearing yourself more clearly too.
The body can become a doorway back to yourself.
About Dr. Svetlana Voloshin
I earned my Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University California in San Diego where I received training in Biofeedback, and additional training in Craniosacral and Visceral Therapies from Upledger-trained therapists.
I also hold a Bachelor of Science in Biology, with minors in Chemistry and Psychology, from George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon, near my hometown of Portland.
Outside the office, I love being near the ocean, walking along the beach, traveling, eating delicious, healthy food, experiencing different cultures, and having meaningful conversations.
I'm curious by nature.
That curiosity is part of how I live, and it's a big part of how I practice medicine.
